Almost completely surrounded by water, Sandy Hook is much more tha n one of New Jersey’s most popular beaches. The combination of beach dunes, holly trees, saltwater marshes, coastal defense ruins, a ninet eenth-century fort, and a historic lighthouse make this trip one not t o miss. And as per tradition, the group will go out for local eats pos t-hike.\n\n\n\nSpecs:\nThe hike is classified as easy to moderate.\nTh e total length of the hike will be about 6 miles long and we will walk at an easy pace. The actual mileage may vary depending on people’s interests.\nThis hike is good for beginners who are in good athletic s hape!\nThe hike should take about 4 hours.\n\nSweeper:\nIf the group s ize is larger than 10, we are going to look for a volunteer to act as a sweeper. Sweepers will walk at the end of the hike line and will mak e sure the group stays together.\n\nHike Leader:\nDavid will be leadin g this hike.\nDavid will not be waiting for late people. In fairness t o those who arrive on time, he will be starting the hike on time.\n\nW hat to bring:\nHiking boots (recommended) and water (required).\nHikin g boots will help keep the sand out of your feet when hiking as the tr ail is a mix of hard surface and sandy surface.\nYou may want to bring long pants due to some poison ivy close to the trail.\nWe will stop f or a light lunch / snack at the picnic area so we recommend you bring something to eat.\n\nTickets:\nAll sales are final. No need to print t ickets; your name will be at the door.\n\nInclement Weather:\nHeavy pr ecipitation will cancel this hike; drizzle will not. Please check your inbox for updates and the NJYP.org calendar. Tickets will be refunded .\n\nDirections:\nTake GSP to exit 117. Keep left onto RT 36. Follow R T 36 for approx 14 miles until you cross the bridge (you will be able to se the ocean at this point). At the light just after the bridge, ma ke a right onto Hartshorne Drive (construction has been ongoing and th e traffic pattern has changed a few times recently so be prepared to m ake a left at the light if necessary). Follow that until you see the s ign for Beach/Lot D just before the visitor’s center.
