Hot Mulled Cider

My parents have lived in Morris County for about 10 years now. And one of the things on my to-do list for about 10 years now is go to the Hacklebarney Farm Cider Mill in Chester.

They're only open during the day; and my 10am - 5pm calendar is shot through the end of October. So I'm penciling this in on my calendar now...

Saturday, 04 06 Nov. 2010 (give or take)
- morning hike in either Hacklebarney or Schooley's Mtn.
- hot mulled cider at the mill
- lunch at the Long Valley Brew Pub

You had me at cider donuts (that's actually what I was checking for when I saw apple cider - the place by me closed down and I haven't found decent ones since). If that wasn't enough, THEN I saw pumpkin cheesecake... yum! I have a football game at noon, but can likely meet up later (late lunch?) depending on the timing for everything. I'll keep an eye on the discussion.

Thanks for the info. It looks like a very picturesque area. How long of a hike were you thinking? What kind of logistics? It looks like Schooley's mountain is the furthest west with the pub in the middle and the Farm the furthest east.

I haven't given it a whole lot of thought yet. Tentatively, I'm thinking it might be nice to grab a bagel & coffee, hit the park around 8 or 9am, get a good 2-3 hour hike in, go to the cider mill around noon (I vaguely remember reading that they have demonstrations around then), and then maybe go for lunch in Long Valley.

this sounds fun, I'm very interested and will keep an eye on the discussion. Thanks for the info! I went apple picking at Alstede in Chester a few weeks ago, and they ran out of cider! This will more than make up for that.

MY PLAN FOR NEXT SATURDAY

The cider mill will be pressing apples throughout the day, so this is what I'm scribbling down on my schedule...

08:30am (or 9am...) - SCHOOLEY'S MOUNTAIN COUNTY PARK
I'm planning to park in the MAIN ENTRANCE / LOT off Springtown Road and get in a leisurely 3 hour loop hike along the creek and maybe past the old quarry.

12:30-ish - HACKLEBARNEY FARM CIDER MILL
...Hot mulled cider...I'm not really sure what to expect, but it's a nice area and I've heard some good things, so it should be a nice visit.

LUNCH AFTERWARDS
...I'm figuring on going to the Long Valley Brew Pub, but I understand that they serve lunch at the farm as well, so I'm leaving it open right now.

Rain or shine, I'll probably be doing both the hike and the cider mill.

I was actually up there two weeks ago and was looking to go back soon, but I have to work that Saturday. The place is really nice and they have some good cider..I also got pretty lost in the corn maze they have, so that was fun too...
