Hi Dan, welcome to the neighborhood!

These are a few things to explore around the area, in no particular order:
- Junebug Art Fest, a Friday art walk in June down Main Street in Metuchen
- Little India along Oak Tree Road in Edison and Iselin, many great Indian shops and restaurants as well as a Bollywood multiplex
- the infamous Rutgers grease trucks on College Avenue in New Brunswick
- Plays in the Park in Roosevelt Park and the Edison Valley Playhouse in Edison, the Forum theater in Metuchen, and the State, George Street, and Crossroads theaters in New Brunswick
- on the Rutgers campus, there's the Zimmerli art museum and Rutgers Gardens

Hope to see you at an NJYP event soon. Have fun!
Welcome to the Garden State! I live in the next township over (Woodbridge). If you don't already know, you live right by two great malls (Menlo Park and Woodbridge Center). Menlo Park Mall has a movie theater. Will's suggestions are excellent. If you do check out the famous grease trucks at Rutgers or the Zimmerili museum or Rutgers Gardens, check out downtown New Brunswick as well. George Street has TONS of bars/restaurants that offer a great variety of ethinic cuisines.

Also since you live in Edison, you can take the train from either Metropark, Edison station or Metuchen (whichever is closer to you) and take NJ transit to NYC or Philly. You can take it to Newark Penn and then transfer onto the PATH train to get to Hoboken - another awesome NJ hot spot.

If you like outdoors stuff like hiking, there's plenty of parks/trails in Northern NJ, if you like the beach, head down south to our world famous Jersey shore (straight down Route 35 or Parkway South and visit Bar Anticipation (Bar A) in Lake Como, NJ, the beaches in Belmar, the boardwalk in Asbury Park, Point Pleasant, Wildwood, etc. If you like amusement parks, visit Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, NJ (Ocean County - exit 7 or 7A on Turnpike, I think).

There's tons of art galleries, museums, historical sites too if you're interested in these things. Check out http://www.state.nj.us/nj/things/ for a list of events held each month throughout the state.
Where in California are you from? I spent most of my life there and moved out to NY in 2003, then NJ in 2006. Anyways, I don't know if this is your thing but another cool thing I've found about NJ, and a productive, healthy way to get outdoors, is to check out some of the farms for fruit picking and such.
I work in Edison, spend most of my free time in Highland Park, and sometimes party in New Brunswick. I live in North Brunswick.

http://www.njyp.org/forum/topics/new-brunswick-happy-hour-july We're having a happy hour right near you on the 19th. Plus the sundress and tie event is this Sunday in New Brunswick.

Feel free to message me with questions on the area - welcome to NJ!
