Event Description

Hey All,

The hike for tomorrow (Friday) is on! Noah recommends you bring a poncho in case it's wetter than a light drizzle...

Remember there will be plenty of woods on this hike to trek through, so it may not be quite as wet once we start hiking....

Enjoy!

Laura

On Thanksgiving you eat a bird, the day after you chase after birds! This hike is for those who want to avoid the malls and the road rage while working off some post-Thanksgiving weight gain.

Grab your cameras and binoculars (if you have them) and join us for our yearly hike up to the Hawk Watch. Based on the migration schedule we should be able to spot several different types of hawks and if we are lucky we will even see some wild turkeys (no promises but we are going to try).

Specs:
The hike is classified as easy to moderate and is about 2.4 miles long.
The hike should take 2 hours.
As with all hikes you must be in good, athletic shape.

Member Cost:
$5 for the first 10 to buy a ticket
$10 for the next 11-25 to buy a ticket
$20 at the door (so please register online)

Non-Member Cost:
$20 online and at the door

RSVP (to the right) and we will let you know when tix are almost gone, when prices are going up, if there are any changes, etc.

Tickets:
There are a limited number of Tickets for sale.
Tickets are not mailed, but your name will be kept at the door.
Actual hike is subject to change depending on weather conditions, fallen trees, etc.
All sales are final.

Sweeper:
If we have a large group we will ask for 2 volunteers to act as sweepers. Sweepers will walk at the end of the hike line and will make sure the group stays together.

Hike Leader:
Noah will be leading this hike. He may do a trial run of the hike to make sure the trails are clean, etc.

What to bring:
Hiking boots and water (required).
Snacks, a light lunch, etc.
Binoculars.
Toilet paper, tissues, plastic bags for garbage, etc.

Inclement Weather:
Heavy rain will cancel this hike but drizzle may not. Please check your inbox for updates and the NJYP.org calendar. Tickets will be refunded.

Directions:
Take Interstate Route 80 to Exit 37 (Hibernia/Rockaway) and bear left at the end of the ramp. Continue north on Green Pond Road (County Route 513) for 6.5 miles and turn right onto Upper Hibernia Road. (If coming from the north, you can take Route 23 to Green Pond Road, head south for 3.7 miles, and turn left onto Upper Hibernia Road.) Follow Upper Hibernia Road for 2.5 miles to the end of the paved portion of the road. Continue ahead for a short distance, turn left just past Brunache Road, and park in the wide gravel area.

How to find the group:
We will meet in the parking lot. Please be on time.

A bit too far for me to drive to take a chance in the weather, so I'll chase the turkey off around home haha.

Next time. :)

Raptor (falcon, vulture, hawk, and eagle) migration season is tapering off until the Spring. Totals for Wildcat Ridge Hawkwatch are found here - http://hawkcount.org/month_summary.php?rsite=103&go=Go+to+site

Approx. 2000 Hawks, 100 Falcons, and 50 Eagles passing over Wildcat Ridge were tallied by our local volunteers. Many of the birds "winter" in South America where prey and weather are more hospitable. What we are left with right now in NJ now are our resident and wintering Hawks (mainly Red-Tailed, Coopers, and Northern Harriers) and Owls (Great Horned, Barred, Screech, Short-Eared, and Long-Eared).

Rough-Legged Hawks and Snowy Owls will descend on NJ from their tundra homes in the north when we hit the dead of winter.

See...that's Jersey for ya...stopping for a turkey on the turnpike! In PA it would have been a puff of feathers!

No it's true Lizzy!

i saw the video on msn.com. it was 3 or 4 wild turkeys and they were chasing this little kid who was trying to get on his bike. then his mother came out to get him and the turkeys chased both of them across the street! LOL! i don't know who was filming it, but they didnt help.

there's also reports on the news this week of yet another wild turkey on exit 14B stopping traffic on the NJ turnpike. these birds are crazy! he was 'ALLEGEDLY' holding a sign on the toll both reading: 'EAT MORE CHIKIN!'.....allegedly.....

these birds are crazy!

This hike will be the perfect remedy for your turkey hangover! We'll explore a beaver pond on our way up to the beautiful Wildcat Ridge for some prime hawkwatching! And if you guys are up to it after the hike, I have a bonus adventure planned which will take us to an abandoned cemetery (circa 1869) which is just a short walk from the parking lot! It will be a very exciting/educational experience.

See you all there!

Y'know those wild turkeys were on the news not too long ago for attacking people? we should probably bring some weapons to fight back. just in case. ;Þ
