Haiti Earthquake: How to Help!

I'm sure many of you have been following the coverage on the devastating earthquake in Haiti. Though the number is still unknown, officials fear more than 100,000 people have died as a result of Tuesday's 7.0-magnitude earthquake in Haiti and millions have been effected. No problem! Mobile giving is also a quick and easy option and the one that I chose to go with. Text "HAITI" to 90999 to donate $10 and when prompted, hit "YES" to confirm the donation to the Red Cross. Check out this article on how much is being raised this way.

Hey Nicole, I know that relief organizations are asking for money instead of other donations (as the infrastructure to distribute physical goods is largely absent after the quake), but do you know if anyone local is looking for volunteers to help with their efforts of support? I'm sure I'm not the only one here out of work who has more free time than money to offer. Thanks!

Thanks Nicole, I did my Red Cross donation this AM and it just went through (it took 12 hours for them to process the payment). Just an FYI to those trying to help out.

When I text in, it took over an hour to process, but not all day. Wow! They must be really backed up, which is great news! I am now reading that the Red Cross has raised $3 million through text-to-donate, which is triple what the article I posted only yesterday reported!!! Keep it going folks!

Kevin, I do not know of any volunteer opportunities offhand (perhaps google this or check out volunteermatch.org). However, if this is the type of volunteer work you are interested in, I would absolutely look into your local red cross disaster services department. They will give you the proper training, so that when disasters do strike, whether it be a local flood or a devastating earthquake in another country, you will be a trained volunteer at the ready.

I work for a U.S. Defense Contractor who is sending not only financial aid, but generators and water purification systems as well. Our charitable foundation which I assist with has set up a donation form at http://www.drs.com/haiti/ and we are matching contributions dollar for dollar. We are a registered 501.C3..

It is a personal choice! Everyone has to donate to who they feel most comfortable with. Luckily, there is a lot of great organizations out there.
