Anyone looking for an easy, convenient, fun and free way to do good in the world? Volunteer with Jersey Cares! I've done lots of projects with them and just became a project coordinator, and would love to make the projects I host more social, a la what NJYP does -- have an activity and go for drinks or food after. It takes just a few minutes to register on www.jerseycares.org, then sign up for any of the hundreds of events when and where its good for you! I'd love to get some NJYP people at the projects I'll be running, so here's the shameless pitch for my own events:

-- Dec. 12th in Caldwell from 11-1 pm (and lunch after if we want). Jersey Cares does a big winter coat drive every year, and needs volunteers to help sort and organize all the donations so we can send them to the places that need them. It's easy manual labor -- honest. Or if anyone is interested in an earlier shift, let me know.

--Dec. 19th in Newark -- they have one big final coat-sorting event so we can get all the coats to needy people for this winter. I'm signed up for it already and they need lots of people for this. I'm not an official coordinator on this one, but email me if you sign up and I'll figure out some way to organize us so we can find each other to do something afterwards or maybe there's a way we can all work in one area together. But I won't know if NJYPers sign up unless you email me ahead of time.

I'll also be the coordinator for other projects in central New Jersey starting in January, so keep an eye out or email me if you can't sign up for any of these but are interested in future ones and I'll keep you posted.

With all the worries and concerns we all have these days, its a really great feeling to be part of something that helps other people meet a very basic need. So come help out! It's social, its not too much of your time and its easy manual labor (which I actually like as an alternative to my desk job and good excuse to skip the gym).

Drop me a line if you sign up for either of these projects -- I hope to see some of you there,

Have a very happy holiday, whatever you celebrate,
Debi

Hi Deb, I work at a college and we are always looking for volunteer opportunities for our Resident Advisor group. The issue is, we are a large group of 35. Is that too many for the newark coat drive. Also, we were trying to do something like a toy drive for christmas, if you hear of any information that would be very helpful.
Very happy to hear you'll be back Kristen!
Zakkiyya: There are in fact more than 35 spaces still available for the Newark project (it's a BIG project!) If you email the Jersey Cares staff and offer 35 volunteers if you can do some part of the project together, I'm sure they'd be happy to accommodate you. And actually they do a toy drive as well, the project is called Frosty's Friends -- more info is at http://jerseycares.org/AboutUs/index.php/Frosty%27s%20Friends.html
I hope that helps!
Thanks so much for the info Deb. I actually just spoke with the coordinator for the Frosty Friends project!
Hey Debbie, I just signed up for the Dec 12 coat sorting in Caldwell, look forward to meeting you.
Amanda: I look forward to meeting you!
Jersey Cares actually just added a coat-sorting event there this Saturday because it's been such a popular drop-off point. If anyone can make it from 11 am to 1 pm this Saturday, the 5th, they need as many volunteers as possible!
They will also be adding a 9 am to 11 am shift on the 12th that i will be heading up, if anyone can do that one, please sign up at www.jerseycares.org!
I hope everyone is enjoying their holidays so far!
Cheers,
Debi
